Speakeasy Bar & Kitchen Review – Cocktails At Breakfast in South Yarra

I first ate here with the sailor a few months ago, in search of a good Melbourne style breakfast. Due to the small shop exteriors down Chapel Steet, Speakeasy didn’t initially stand out. But where the facade may be modest, the interior certainly isn’t and the food has won a personal award of mine.

I was initially impressed with the style of this restaurant. It is minimalist and contemporary, with an mural lined ‘secret garden’, making it feel like Melbourne’s graffiti alley, Hosier Lane. The courtyard is also remarkably generous for an urban eatery.

As we dined before midday, the breakfast menu was hitting the spot. Although they do have a beefier lunch menu, served from 11-5 and minus so many egg options.

I couldn’t quite place my finger on the origins of the food. It was definitely contemporary Australian using some gorgeous local produce, like the Hudson River rainbow trout and Meredith goats cheese. But the combination of flavours and accompaniments sings of the meditteranian and middle east, like the harissa labneh, crispy polenta and haloumi corn & zucchini fritter.

We both ended up going for the classic GF Eggs Benedict and as it is a ‘Speakeasy’, it would be a little rude not to order a tipple. I went for the Aperol Spritz and the Sailor had ‘Once Bitter Urban Ale’ on tap, which hit the spot.

Needless to say, the food was the next surprise of the morning. I was made a dish that earned my Travel Mermaid prize for being the best Eggs Bene I’ve ever had. And I’ve had a lot.

The truffle hollandaise was the perfect consistency, the wood smoked ham was crispy and it was generously portioned with herbs. The freshness of the dill, parsley, mint and lemon myrtle had turned the dish from being good to great. In addition, the artisan toast was the perfect thickness to hold the sauce, not being soggy.

After having such a great experience the first time around, I did make a second trip to Speakeasy a few weeks later and ordered another smashing breakfast dish, which  also came with a generous bunch of fresh herbs.

My Sailor opted for a Bene again after loving it the first time around, although it wasn’t quite as well executed on this occasion. The ham wasn’t crispy and the sauce was a little thick, as well as being less refined with the herbs (the dill was loaded on very heavy!)

Since visiting, I have read that Speakeasy have previously hosted a Toms shoes pop-up and this year, ‘BierYoga‘ which has been making a name for itself of late. Definitely keep your eyes peeled on this place for more quirky events in South Yarra.
